The story begins with former Inspector Rycroft Philostrate, aka Philo, investigating a grisly murder that has caused social unrest. Vignette Stonemoss and Black Raven plot revenge on The Burgue's human leader, Jonah Breakspear, and the oppression that Sophie Longerbane's unfair tourmaline inherits supernatural abilities that threaten her destiny and The Row's future. Imogen Spurnrose and her partner, Agreus Astrayon, encounter a violent new society after escaping The Burgue and her vengeful brother Ezra. Each hero will face impossible dilemmas and tests that will determine the soul in the epic conclusion of Carnival Row, as humans and fans are divided and free on the line
